Job Overview
MONUSCO is seeking a skilled and motivated UN Volunteer to support its vehicle maintenance and diagnostics operations. The ideal candidate will specialize in the repair and upkeep of electrical and electronic systems in UN mission vehicles. This is a unique opportunity to contribute technical expertise in a humanitarian setting while developing professionally in a dynamic, multicultural environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repair on the UN vehicle fleet’s electrical and electronic systems.
- Use tools such as onboard diagnostic (OBD) scanners, multimeters, and ECU readers to detect faults and analyze performance.
- Advise and train mechanics and technicians in electronic systems and diagnostics.
- Support procurement and integration of new diagnostic equipment and software upgrades.
- Identify required spare parts and ensure effective inventory management for electronic components.
- Guide workshop staff on using special service tools (SSTs) and universal testing equipment.
- Document workshop activities, including diagnostics performed, repairs completed, and system performance analysis.
- Support safety and compliance initiatives in workshop operations.
- Prepare reports on workshop productivity, spare parts usage, and training efforts.
- Assist with vehicle decommissioning and write-off processes.
- Carry out additional duties as directed by the Motor Transport Officer or Workshop Supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of a technical or vocational diploma in electrical or electronic engineering.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience in automotive repairs and diagnostics, specifically in vehicle electronics and control systems.
- Familiarity with OBD systems, CAN bus networks, ECU programming, and airbag/ASR control systems.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams and service manuals.
- Proficiency with diagnostic software and computer-based vehicle testing tools.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office; familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., Umoja) is an advantage.
- Experience working with the UN or other international NGOs is a plus.
- Valid driving license (Category B required; Category C is desirable).
- Experience training or mentoring technical teams is highly desirable.

Living Conditions in Entebbe
The assignment is based in Entebbe, Uganda — a peaceful lakeside town approximately 35 km from Kampala. Entebbe hosts the main international airport and provides access to essential services, hospitals, schools, supermarkets, and recreational facilities. The duty station is categorized as a family duty station with security level 2. UN personnel are well-supported by the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), and regular security briefings are provided.
UN Volunteers will receive support in locating long-term accommodation. Rents in Entebbe range between USD 400–800 per month. UNV will assist with temporary housing arrangements upon arrival. Volunteers will also be required to present a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate upon entry. A Settling-In Grant and monthly Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) are provided as part of the UNV benefits package.
