Remuneration: Salary Scale PU7
Age Limit: Applicants must not exceed 55 years of age at the time of application.
Job Purpose
The Technician in the Department of Geomatics and Land Management will support academic and technical functions by formulating, reviewing, and maintaining standard operating procedures for laboratory use, ensuring efficient management of equipment and student practical sessions while upholding safety and quality standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Generate technical reports, inventories, and equipment/materials orders for the unit.
- Prepare budgets and provide accountability for the use of physical and financial resources in the unit.
- Oversee the management and proper utilization of laboratory equipment and facilities.
- Requisition, maintain, and account for financial and material resources of the unit.
- Prepare and supervise students during laboratory practical sessions and fieldwork exercises.
- Collaborate with academic staff to facilitate teaching and demonstration of practicals.
- Enforce and maintain safety protocols, quality control, and assurance guidelines in the unit.
- Provide technical mentorship to junior technical staff in the department.
- Perform any other related tasks as assigned by the Head of Department or supervisor.
Required Qualifications
- An Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Geomatics, Land Surveying, or Geodesy from a recognized institution.
- At least three (3) years of relevant working experience in a technical or academic support environment.
Essential Skills and Competencies
- Customer Care: Able to support and interact professionally with students and staff.
- Clear Communication: Ability to communicate precisely and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Analytical Skills: Capable of identifying problems and providing effective technical solutions.
- Technical Proficiency: Competent in operating laboratory machines and using computers for reporting and inventory management.
Ideal Candidate Profile
This role is best suited for a technically skilled and detail-oriented professional with a background in geomatics or related fields. The ideal candidate will have experience in academic laboratory settings, be knowledgeable in geospatial tools and instrumentation, and demonstrate initiative in ensuring technical excellence and safety compliance.
