Job Summary
Diageo is hiring a skilled and safety-conscious Technical Operator to join our packaging line operations in Kampala. This full-time role requires working rotational twelve-hour day and night shifts and involves operating and maintaining complex packaging machinery across our supply chain.
The Technical Operator will work closely with logistics, brewing, and contracted supply chain teams while ensuring machinery operates at optimal levels in a safe and quality-focused environment. Key Responsibilities
- Operate any of the nine packaging line process machines—De-palletizer, Palletizer, Unpacker, Packer, Washer, EBI, Filler, Pasteurizer, Labeler—according to manufacturer guidelines and set standards.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety procedures for self and others, aiming for zero injuries.
- Meet production and quality requirements in compliance with food safety and Diageo standards.
- Perform routine product quality checks and respond to any defects or anomalies promptly.
- Execute preventive, corrective, and autonomous maintenance tasks to sustain machine reliability above 95%.
- Minimize process and component waste to below 1% as part of continuous improvement efforts.
- Keep detailed records aligned with the company’s quality systems and documentation protocols.
- Support and train interns, trainees, and new recruits on operational tasks.
- Collaborate with the Shift Packaging Manager, Quality Analyst, Logistics, and Asset Care teams to maintain operational efficiency.
- Participate in root cause analyses, using tools like 5 Whys, to drive problem-solving and long-term reliability.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned by the team leader or head of function.
Financial and Operational Impact
- Consistent shift output (>90%) ensures achievement of daily, weekly, and monthly sales targets.
- Helps deliver cost of goods sold (COGs) productivity goals by minimizing waste and downtime.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Ordinary Diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, or Instrumentation Engineering.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturing environment.
- Experience working in a 24-hour shift system (rotational).
- Ability to work efficiently under minimal supervision in high-pressure production settings.
- Highly self-motivated and goal-oriented with a focus on results and quality.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented mindset.
- Conscious of safety, quality, and time management principles.
- Flexible and willing to work long hours to meet targets.
