Job Purpose

As a Senior Accountant, you will report directly to the Chief Finance Officer (CFO) and support the financial stewardship of AKES Uganda. You will ensure compliance with internal controls, implement efficient accounting systems, maintain accurate records, and guide a small finance team. You’ll play a critical role in financial audits, tax filings, budgeting, payroll, and student revenue management across schools.

Key Responsibilities

1. Income Accounting & Receivables Oversight

  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date student registers across all schools.

  • Verify that invoices align with enrolment data and that bank deposits reconcile with student receipts.

  • Generate and post revenue journal entries in the accounting system after CFO approval.

  • Produce accurate debtor and enrolment reports weekly and monthly, for internal leadership and board reporting.

  • Liaise daily with school heads to ensure fee collections are aligned with policy.

2. Payables, Payroll, and Compliance

  • Oversee a payment tracking system, ensuring timely processing and follow-up on delays.

  • Ensure timely VAT filings, resolve URA queries, and monitor receivables from URA.

  • Supervise payroll processing, ensuring accuracy and board approval before the 25th of each month.

  • Ensure PAYE returns are filed monthly.

  • Reconcile all accounts payable and manage outstanding balances effectively.

3. Cash, Bank, and Petty Cash Management

  • Ensure timely bank reconciliations by the 5th of every month.

  • Conduct surprise petty cash audits and enforce controls as per financial policy.

  • Monitor and record fixed deposit interest, and track income on investments.

4. Fixed Assets Management

  • Maintain and update the fixed asset register, ensuring consistency with depreciation schedules.

  • Oversee asset tagging and insurance for all locations.

5. Budgeting and Financial Reporting

  • Assist departments with budget template completion and data gathering.

  • Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.

  • Prepare schedules and support internal and external audits.

  • Ensure tax compliance and timely filing of company returns.

6. Leadership and Staff Supervision

  • Lead and mentor a finance team of 4–5 accounting staff.

  • Promote accountability and high-performance culture.

  • Address audit issues and internal risks proactively.


Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance.

  • CPA(U) and/or ACCA certification is required.

  • At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in a supervisory role.

  • Prior experience in a school or non-profit organization is an added advantage.


Key Skills and Competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel, Word, and accounting software (preferably ERP systems).

  • Strong leadership, planning, and team coordination abilities.

  • Exceptional analytical and reconciliation skills.

  • Meticulous attention to detail and process improvement.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
