Uganda Airlines is seeking to recruit a Safety Manager to lead the implementation and ongoing management of the company’s Safety Management System (SMS). This is a key role responsible for overseeing safety across all operational functions of Uganda’s national carrier. The Safety Manager will provide independent assessments, guidance, and ensure compliance with local and international aviation safety regulations and standards.

Job Summary

The Safety Manager will oversee the effectiveness of the organization’s Safety Management System (SMS), ensuring a proactive and data-driven approach to identifying and mitigating safety risks across all airline operations. The role involves coordinating safety promotion initiatives, conducting investigations, ensuring compliance with civil aviation requirements, and reporting directly to the Accountable Manager and senior management.

This leadership position is central to upholding Uganda Airlines’ safety standards and culture, both internally and in collaboration with subcontractors and aviation partners.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

As a Safety Manager, your primary responsibilities will include:

• Leading the development and implementation of the organization's Safety Management System (SMS).

• Ensuring SMS processes and procedures align with corporate safety objectives and regulatory requirements.

• Coordinating daily SMS activities and working with all operational departments to ensure consistent implementation.

• Collecting, analyzing, and reporting safety data to inform risk assessments and safety improvements.

• Managing the organizational safety database and producing actionable insights to guide safety-related decisions.

• Conducting investigations into incidents and accidents, identifying root causes, and recommending corrective actions.

• Implementing and promoting safety awareness programs, training sessions, and safety publicity campaigns.

• Organizing and leading formal safety review meetings and reporting on safety performance metrics.

• Collaborating with managers, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure safety expectations and goals are understood and met.

• Conducting risk assessments, audits, and inspections to proactively manage operational safety risks.

• Participating in and supporting the Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) program to identify and address operational risks.

• Reviewing and managing organizational change processes, ensuring safety risks are adequately mitigated.

• Leading Safety Action Group meetings and contributing to the development of a strong safety culture across the airline.

• Supporting the Head of Safety with ad-hoc safety responsibilities as required.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

To be successful in this role, candidates should meet the following requirements:

Educational & Technical Qualifications

• A Diploma or Degree in Flight Operations, Aircraft Maintenance, Aviation Safety, Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field.

• Professional training in Safety Management Systems (SMS) is essential.

• Additional certifications in Accident Investigation and aviation safety oversight are an added advantage.

Experience

• Minimum of 3 years' experience in flight operations, aircraft maintenance, or ground operations within an aviation environment.

• Hands-on experience implementing and managing safety management systems in a regulated environment.

Technical & Interpersonal Skills

• Strong understanding of airline safety standards, accident investigation procedures, and aviation risk management.

• Exceptional analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.

• Proficient in computer applications and safety reporting systems.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Leadership abilities with a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.

• Able to communicate complex safety issues effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
