Job Overview

Bank of India Uganda Limited is seeking a highly competent and experienced professional to fill the position of Risk Manager cum ESG Champion. The Risk Manager cum ESG Champion will coordinate the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Bank’s risk management policies, systems, and strategies in line with regulatory requirements and the Bank’s mission and strategic objectives. The role also drives ESG risk oversight, sustainability reporting, and promotion of responsible banking practices across the institution.

The position works closely with senior management, the Board, regulators, and internal stakeholders to strengthen governance, risk culture, and long-term sustainability.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Environmental, Social, and Governance Responsibilities

  • Monitor ESG risk exposure and assess its impact on the Bank’s capital and overall financial stability.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines relating to ESG and sustainable finance.
  • Identify, report, and track violations of the Bank’s ESG framework and manage approved exceptions.
  • Ensure ESG reporting requirements are met, including adoption of appropriate ESG risk monitoring tools.
  • Proactively analyze data to identify gaps and underutilized opportunities for green and sustainable lending.
  • Provide recommendations to management on ESG integration into lending, investment, and operational decisions.
  • Drive ESG culture and mindset across the Bank and among key stakeholders.

Risk Management Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an enterprise Risk Management program, systems, and procedures for identifying, assessing, and managing risks.
  • Work closely with risk owners and process owners to ensure risk management aligns with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain a cost-effective risk monitoring, evaluation, control, and reporting framework.
  • Prepare and present risk reports to Management and the Board on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Ensure timely identification, analysis, and assessment of all material risks and implementation of appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Continuously review and enhance risk management methodologies to address emerging risks.

Training, Compliance, and Reporting

  • Ensure management and staff receive continuous training and sensitization on risk management and ESG matters.
  • Conduct periodic compliance tests to confirm adherence to regulatory and internal risk standards.
  • Ensure effective risk monitoring by line management across all business units.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory and shareholder returns and reports accurately and within required timelines.
  • Perform Political, Economic, Social, and Technological analysis to identify emerging risks affecting the Bank.

Audit and Assurance

  • Ensure timely resolution of audit findings from internal audits, external audits, parent bank reviews, and regulatory inspections.
  • Track corrective actions and report progress to Management and the Board.
  • Strengthen coordination between risk management, audit, and compliance functions.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic risk and ESG advisory support to senior management and the Board.
  • Support strategic planning through risk and sustainability insights.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by Management or the Board.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Academic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Accounting and Finance, or another business-related discipline.
  • Additional qualifications or certification in ESG or sustainability are an added advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum of five years of progressive experience in banking or financial institutions.
  • At least three years at a supervisory or managerial level within a Risk Management department.
  • Demonstrated experience in enterprise risk management, with specific exposure to ESG-related risks.

Technical Competencies

  • Up-to-date knowledge of methodologies and trends in business risk management and ESG.
  • Strong understanding of risk management frameworks within the Ugandan banking system.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements applicable to banks in Uganda.
  • Basic knowledge of information technology systems and their relevance to risk management.

  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities.

Physical Demands

The role requires sustained concentration, analytical review of reports, and active participation in management and Board discussions.

Age Requirement

Preferably below forty years of age. However, management reserves the right to determine eligibility based on experience, qualifications, and organizational requirements.
