Job Overview

The Risk Manager cum ESG Champion will coordinate the development and implementation of the Bank’s Risk Management policies, frameworks, and strategies to support achievement of the Bank’s mission and strategic objectives. The role combines traditional banking risk management with leadership responsibility for driving ESG adoption, monitoring ESG-related risks, and embedding sustainability principles across the organization.
The successful candidate will work closely with senior management, the Board, regulators, and internal stakeholders to strengthen risk governance, ensure regulatory compliance, promote ESG culture, and enhance the Bank’s resilience and long-term sustainability.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Environmental, Social, and Governance Responsibilities
- Monitor ESG risk exposure and assess its potential impact on the Bank’s capital adequacy and overall financial stability.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines related to ESG risk management and sustainability reporting.
- Identify, report, and track incidences of non-compliance with the Bank’s ESG framework and manage approved exceptions.
- Ensure ESG reporting requirements are met, including adoption and use of appropriate risk monitoring toolkits.
- Analyze data proactively to identify gaps and underutilized opportunities in green and sustainable lending.
- Provide strategic recommendations to management on expanding sustainable finance and green product offerings.
- Drive ESG culture and mindset across the Bank and among key stakeholders, including staff, customers, and partners.
- Support integration of ESG considerations into credit, investment, and operational decision-making.
Enterprise Risk Management Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive Risk Management program, systems, and procedures for identifying, assessing, and managing potential risks.
- Work closely with risk owners and process owners to ensure risk management practices align with applicable standards and regulatory requirements.
- Establish and maintain an effective and cost-efficient risk monitoring, evaluation, control, and reporting framework.
- Prepare and present risk reports to Management and the Board on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
- Ensure timely identification, analysis, and assessment of all material risks and oversee formulation and implementation of appropriate risk responses.
- Continuously review and enhance risk management tools and methodologies to address emerging risks.
Training, Compliance, and Regulatory Reporting
- Ensure management and staff are continuously trained and sensitized on risk management and ESG requirements.
- Conduct periodic compliance tests to confirm adherence to regulatory requirements and internal risk standards.
- Ensure line management effectively monitors and manages risks within their respective areas.
- Prepare and submit regulatory and shareholder returns and reports accurately and within required timelines.
- Perform Political, Economic, Social, and Technological analysis to identify emerging risks affecting the Bank.
Audit and Assurance Support
- Ensure timely and effective resolution of audit findings arising from internal audits, external audits, parent bank reviews, and regulatory inspections.
- Track implementation of corrective actions and report progress to management and the Board.
- Strengthen coordination between risk management, audit, and compliance functions.
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide advisory support to management and the Board on enterprise risk and ESG matters.
- Support strategic planning by providing risk insights and sustainability considerations.
- Perform any other duties assigned by Management or the Board from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Accounting and Finance, or another business-related discipline.
- Additional qualifications or certifications in ESG or sustainability are an added advantage.
Experience
- Demonstrated progressive experience working within banks or financial institutions.
- Substantial experience in a supervisory or managerial role within a Risk Management department.
- Proven experience in enterprise risk management, with specific exposure to ESG-related risks.
Technical Competencies
- Up-to-date knowledge of methodologies and trends in business risk management and ESG.
- Strong understanding of risk management practices within the Ugandan banking system.
- Good working knowledge of regulatory frameworks applicable to banks in Uganda.
- Basic knowledge of information technology systems and their role in risk management.
Behavioural Competencies
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Ability to multitask effectively and manage competing priorities.
- High standards of integrity and professionalism.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- High emotional intelligence and sound judgment.
Physical Demands
The role requires sustained concentration, analytical review of reports, and active participation in management and Board discussions.
Age Requirement
Preferably below forty years of age. However, management reserves the right to determine eligibility based on experience, qualifications, and organizational needs.
