Job Overview

Kalangala Infrastructure Services Ltd is seeking a qualified Network Operations & Maintenance Engineer (NOME) to oversee, manage, and optimize electrical infrastructure operations. The role covers power distribution networks and renewable energy systems to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable service delivery.

The position serves as the second-in-command within the Power Department and supports policy development, regulatory compliance, and cross-departmental collaboration.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Grid Operations and Maintenance

  • Monitor and manage grid performance to ensure stable and reliable power supply.
  • Implement and oversee preventive maintenance schedules for transformers, substations, and switchgear.
  • Respond promptly to faults, outages, and grid anomalies to minimize downtime.
  • Coordinate grid load balancing, voltage regulation, and switching programs with sector stakeholders.

Solar Power Plant Operations

  • Oversee Solar PV power plant operations to ensure maximum efficiency and energy output.
  • Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance on inverters, panels, and monitoring systems.
  • Utilize SCADA and other monitoring tools to track performance and resolve issues proactively.

Performance Optimization

  • Collect and analyze system performance metrics to identify inefficiencies and bottlenecks.
  • Propose and implement solutions to improve system reliability and reduce operational costs.
  • Track technical and commercial energy losses and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure network asset digitization meets required standards.
  • Plan for grid asset expansion and line extensions.

Policy, Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with national safety codes, regulatory standards, and environmental requirements.
  • Contribute to the development and enforcement of standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Prepare reports on safety incidents, operational challenges, and recommended improvements.

Team Leadership and Collaboration

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to technicians and operators.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for complex system issues.
  • Identify skills gaps and coordinate training initiatives with the Head of Electrical Services.

Cross-Departmental Support

  • Collaborate with ferry and water services departments to maintain electrical systems.
  • Develop and implement maintenance schedules for electrical systems on ferries and water supply installations.

Reporting, Documentation and Risk Management

  • Prepare regular performance reports including KPIs, downtime metrics, and maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain accurate records of grid operations, solar plant performance, and maintenance activities.
  • Lead emergency response teams during outages.
  • Identify operational risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure business continuity.

Innovation and Technology Integration

  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies to improve system efficiency and sustainability.
  • Support integration of renewable energy solutions into existing infrastructure.

Other Duties

  • Perform any other responsibilities assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related field.

Experience

  • At least six years of relevant professional experience.
  • Minimum of two years in a supervisory role.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of grid operations, power generation systems, and renewable energy solutions.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and manage field operations effectively.
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to recommend actionable improvements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High attention to accuracy and precision in operations and reporting.
  • Strong collaborative mindset for cross-departmental work.
