Position: Lecturer, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Institution: Makerere University Job Location: Kampala, Uganda Reports To: Head of Department Closing Date: 4th August 2025 Tenure of Appointment: Permanent Remuneration: Salary Scale PU6.1 Age Limit: Applicants should not exceed fifty-five (55) years of age at the time of application.

Job Summary

Makerere University, Uganda’s premier institution of higher learning, is seeking a qualified, dynamic, and results-oriented individual for the position of Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The ideal candidate will specialize in Geotechnical Engineering and will be expected to contribute to teaching, research, mentorship, and community engagement in one of the university’s key academic departments.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach, examine, and grade students in line with university curriculum and academic standards.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects, ensuring academic integrity and innovation.
  • Mentor and support junior academic staff and graduate teaching assistants in the department.
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in geotechnical engineering and related fields.
  • Engage in community outreach and knowledge transfer activities aligned with the university’s mandate.
  • Develop and write research proposals aimed at securing external funding for departmental and institutional development.
  • Carry out any other official responsibilities as assigned by the Head of Department.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  1. A PhD in Civil Engineering with a strong specialization in Geotechnical Engineering.
  2. A Master of Science in Geotechnical Engineering or related fields such as Geohazards.
  3. An Honour’s Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized institution.
Additional academic or research credentials, published work in reputable peer-reviewed journals, and prior university-level teaching experience will be considered an added advantage.
