Yako Bank is hiring a Cyber Security Officer to strengthen its digital security infrastructure and ensure ongoing protection of the bank’s systems and data. The role is centered around implementing robust security controls, monitoring threats, responding to incidents, and supporting compliance with Uganda’s cyber security regulations. The successful candidate will play a critical role in protecting customers’ sensitive information and maintaining the integrity of banking operations.Key Responsibilities:
- Implement and monitor the bank’s Cyber Security Strategy in alignment with the IT architecture and long-term digital goals.
- Deploy, manage, and maintain critical security tools such as firewalls, endpoint protection software, encryption systems, vulnerability scanners, and penetration testing tools.
- Continuously monitor bank systems and network environments for unauthorized access, suspicious activity, and malware threats.
- Coordinate and implement upgrades to the bank’s security infrastructure, ensuring performance optimization and minimal service disruption.
- Develop and enforce policies around identity and access management to control user privileges and secure sensitive data.
- Conduct IT security awareness training for staff, including phishing prevention and data protection practices.
- Provide support during internal and external IT audits; follow up on findings to ensure full compliance with IT security standards.
- Oversee incident and change management related to cyber security issues, following IT governance procedures.
- Identify information security risks, develop treatment plans, and execute threat and vulnerability management processes.
- Lead cyber security incident response efforts, conducting root cause analysis and creating actionable mitigation reports.
- Ensure full compliance with Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019) and any other legal and regulatory requirements affecting information security in the banking sector.
- Collaborate with IT teams to assess the security impact of new applications, systems, hardware upgrades, and third-party service integrations.
- Keep up-to-date with emerging cyber security threats, global best practices, and regulatory updates to continually refine and improve the bank’s cyber security posture.
- Contribute to the planning and execution of annual IT security budgets, tools procurement, and work plans aligned with strategic goals.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field.
- Additional technical certifications in networks, systems, or database security are desirable.
Required Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in IT security roles within banking, telecoms, government agencies, or consulting firms.
- Background in general IT roles such as network administration, system analysis, IT auditing, or cyber risk analysis is considered a strong foundation.
Professional Certifications (Added Advantage):
- CISSP – Certified Information Systems Security Professional
- CEH – Certified Ethical Hacker
- CISA – Certified Information Systems Auditor
- CISM – Certified Information Security Manager
- CCSP, MSCE, NSE, CCNA, CCNP, or related security certifications
Technical Skills and Competencies:
- Deep understanding of data protection laws, particularly the Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019) in Uganda.
- Knowledge of global IT security frameworks such as ISO27001/2, COBIT, NIST, and PCI DSS.
- Proficiency in analyzing and solving security-related problems with logical and structured approaches.
- Experience in conducting vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and security control validations.
- Hands-on experience with UNIX/Linux and Microsoft servers, virtualization environments, and intrusion detection systems (IDS/IPS).
- Good knowledge of modern cyber security strategies, security automation tools, and evolving digital threats in the banking sector.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
