Job Summary

The Head of Product Operations will be responsible for the strategic and operational management of all DHL product lines—Ocean Freight, Airfreight, and Road Freight—in Uganda. This leadership role involves driving business growth, ensuring service quality, and optimizing operational processes to deliver profitability and efficiency across the board.

Key Responsibilities

1. Product and Business Development

• Lead, control, and develop freight product operations (OFR, AFR, and RFR) to align with global DHL strategy.

• Deliver on profitability, asset utilization, and operational excellence objectives.

• Drive cost optimization and ensure quality service delivery across all logistics operations in Uganda.

• Oversee implementation of ISO standards and DHL operating procedures.

2. Customer Relationship Management

• Develop and manage long-term partnerships with strategic and key account customers.

• Provide direct support to the commercial teams regarding pricing and customer engagement strategies.

• Proactively respond to client concerns and ensure customer satisfaction through efficient issue resolution.

• Enhance DHL’s brand reputation by delivering excellence in logistics services.

3. Stakeholder Engagement

• Manage carrier relationships and evaluate performance based on corporate policies.

• Ensure adherence to Preferred Carrier programs and DHL quality standards.

• Coordinate with trade bodies, government agencies, and research institutions.

• Support localization of global programs, initiatives, and systems for Uganda’s context.

4. Operational Management

• Set KPIs for operational units and ensure targets are met through resource planning and staff performance management.

• Analyze cost structures and identify areas for process and financial improvement.

• Monitor and implement IT systems that support logistics operations.

• Lead efforts in capacity management, procurement, traffic management, and local purchasing.

5. Team and People Management

• Build and manage a strong operations team with clearly defined roles and responsibilities.

• Foster a culture of continuous improvement, teamwork, and accountability.

• Conduct regular performance appraisals, coaching, and training sessions for team development.

• Allocate resources effectively to meet global and local business targets.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this leadership role, candidates must demonstrate both technical expertise and managerial prowess:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or related field.

• 5 to 7 years of progressive experience in the logistics industry, particularly in freight forwarding operations (OFR/AFR/RFR).

• Minimum of 2 years in a Product Manager or similar senior role within a reputable logistics organization.

• In-depth understanding of air, ocean, and road freight operations (both imports and exports).

• Strong commercial acumen and analytical decision-making skills.

• Knowledge of regulatory frameworks governing logistics in Uganda and internationally.

Essential Skills

• Exceptional leadership and people management abilities.

• Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills.

• Proficient in customer-facing roles, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.

• Excellent communication (written and spoken) and presentation skills.

• High-level problem-solving, strategic thinking, and organizational skills.

• Proficient in logistics IT systems and analytics tools.
