About the Opportunity

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is hiring a Graduate Trainee – Substation Maintenance to support the Substation Maintenance team in performing inspections, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance on substation equipment. This hands-on role is designed to introduce recent graduates to real-world maintenance practices and safety protocols in electrical substations.

The trainee will gain valuable technical experience under the guidance of experienced engineers and technicians, building a solid foundation for a career in electrical distribution system maintenance.


Impact of the Role

By participating in maintenance tasks and system diagnostics, the trainee contributes to the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of substations. This role prepares graduates for more advanced engineering responsibilities in Uganda’s power sector through practical exposure and continuous learning.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in routine inspection and cleaning of key substation components such as transformers, circuit breakers, and isolators.

  • Accompany engineers and technicians during preventive maintenance and minor repair activities.

  • Observe and support fault diagnosis procedures by handling basic tools and reading test results.

  • Help document unusual equipment behavior, performance anomalies, and visual findings.

  • Strictly follow electrical safety protocols, including lock-out/tag-out procedures and PPE use.

  • Actively participate in daily toolbox talks, safety briefings, and on-site risk assessments.

  • Learn the proper use of tools, test equipment, and computerized maintenance systems.

  • Attend internal technical training on substation components, operation, and testing techniques.

  • Maintain a detailed trainee logbook documenting tasks performed, site visits, and lessons learned.

  • Support in organizing test reports, updating maintenance records, and managing files.

  • Work closely with technicians and engineers to contribute to scheduled maintenance programs.

  • Attend departmental meetings and share relevant trainee updates or observations.


Expected Outputs

  • Enhanced understanding of substation systems and maintenance workflows.

  • Timely and accurate completion of assigned inspection and support tasks.

  • Consistent application of workplace safety standards and best practices.

  • Well-maintained trainee documentation including learning progress reports.

  • Demonstrated readiness for more advanced field responsibilities in substation operations.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.

  • Must have graduated within the past three (3) years from a recognized institution.

Experience:

  • No prior professional experience is required.


Key Competencies

  • Basic understanding of electrical power systems and distribution principles.

  • Willingness to work in outdoor and high-voltage environments.

  • Attention to detail with a strong focus on safety and compliance.

  • Eagerness to learn new tools, systems, and maintenance techniques.

  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
