About the Role

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is seeking dynamic and motivated recent graduates for the position of Graduate Trainee – Protection and Communication. This trainee role is designed to provide hands-on experience in the operation, testing, and maintenance of power system protection and communication equipment used in the distribution network.

Under the mentorship of experienced engineers, the trainee will learn the principles and practical applications of protective relays, control devices, voltage regulation systems, and substation communication protocols—contributing to the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the electricity distribution system.


Impact of the Role

The Graduate Trainee plays a vital role in supporting field inspections, testing procedures, and maintenance of protection and communication systems. This role enhances system integrity and prepares the trainee for future technical roles in power system protection and control engineering.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with routine testing and inspection of protection relays, voltage regulators, and control systems.

  • Observe and help configure basic settings for protection and communication devices.

  • Learn to read and interpret protection and control schematics and wiring diagrams.

  • Draft and update simple protection diagrams and documentation under supervision.

  • Participate in commissioning activities for basic protection and control equipment.

  • Record and organize test results, commissioning data, and maintenance logs.

  • Join field teams during maintenance and inspections at substations or field sites.

  • Prepare and organize tools, materials, and checklists for site tasks.

  • Comply strictly with all safety regulations and participate in safety briefings and training.

  • Collaborate with Planning and Systems Control teams for data collection and site audits.

  • Learn about data communication and its integration with system performance monitoring.

  • Submit weekly training reports summarizing activities, observations, and key lessons learned.

  • Help update equipment data, logs, and records in the technical database.

  • Active participation in hands-on testing, inspection, and fieldwork activities.

  • Accurate and well-documented reports and equipment logs.

  • Improved competency in using testing equipment and interpreting technical schematics.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

  • Must have graduated within the last three (3) years from a recognized institution.

Experience:

  • No professional experience required.

  • Willingness to learn and operate in both field and office environments.
