About the Opportunity
Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is seeking passionate and self-motivated recent graduates for the position of Graduate Trainee – GIS. This opportunity offers practical experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial data management, and mapping to support engineering and infrastructure planning within Uganda’s power distribution network.
The successful candidates will work closely with the GIS team to collect, process, and maintain geospatial data—contributing to decision-making and operational planning across the company.
Impact of the Role
This role strengthens the accuracy, accessibility, and relevance of geospatial data used across multiple departments. By supporting the development and maintenance of GIS systems, the trainee plays a vital part in improving infrastructure planning, service delivery, and data-driven decision-making at UEDCL.
Key Responsibilities

Assist in collecting, compiling, and organizing geospatial data from fieldwork, satellite imagery, and maps.

Support in updating and maintaining GIS databases under supervision.

Create basic maps and geovisualizations using GIS software.

Learn to present spatial data in clear and usable formats for internal use.

Conduct basic spatial analyses, including queries and overlays, with guidance.

Support technical teams with map-based reports and location data.

Participate in field audits and provide GIS support for field teams.

Take part in training sessions on GIS tools, standards, and practices.

Document GIS workflows, updates, and project activities accurately.

Gain exposure to how spatial data supports engineering and planning decisions.

Follow best practices in geospatial data handling, storage, and reporting.

Assist with preparing basic technical reports and GIS outputs.

Basic and accurate maps prepared for internal use.

Improved proficiency in GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).

Participation in field assignments and internal training sessions.

Accurate data entry and clear documentation of GIS tasks.

Positive collaboration with the GIS and engineering teams.
Qualifications
Academic Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geomatics, Information Technology, or a closely related field.

Must have graduated within the past three (3) years from a recognized institution.

Exposure to GIS concepts through academic coursework, projects, or internships.
Experience:

No formal work experience required.
Key Competencies

Foundational understanding of GIS and mapping concepts.

Familiarity with GIS tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms.

Strong interest in spatial data and infrastructure planning.

Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel and technical documentation.

Analytical mindset with attention to detail and accuracy.

Willingness to learn and work in a collaborative, technical environment.

Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions effectively.
