About the Opportunity
Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented graduate to join its Engineering Department as a Graduate Trainee – Design Engineer. This role offers practical experience in the design of electrical distribution systems and supports ongoing infrastructure development and upgrade projects.
Under the guidance of senior engineers, the trainee will learn to prepare technical drawings, perform basic engineering calculations, and apply national and international design standards in real-world utility projects.
Impact of the Role
The Graduate Trainee will support the accuracy and quality of design documentation, contributing to efficient project execution and network development. In return, they will gain hands-on experience in power distribution design, technical tools, and utility engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities

Assist in drafting basic electrical distribution layouts for substations, transformers, and overhead/underground power lines.

Support the creation of diagrams and technical specifications using tools like AutoCAD.

Perform simple calculations, including load flow analysis, voltage drop estimation, and transformer sizing under supervision.

Gain exposure to advanced design software such as ETAP or PSS/E through guided practice or training sessions.

Collaborate with planning teams to understand project needs and design requirements.

Participate in site visits and meetings to observe how designs are implemented on the ground.

Study and apply electrical design standards, safety codes, and company protocols.

Help maintain design files, technical reports, and organized documentation.

Prepare basic cost estimates and resource requirements for proposed designs.

Observe and support adjustments in design plans based on project feedback or field realities.

Assist in creating presentation materials or visual summaries for internal updates.

Engage in brainstorming sessions to contribute to design solutions and alternatives.

Work within cross-functional teams, including planning, operations, and contractors.

Communicate progress and seek constructive feedback on design tasks.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a closely related field.

Must have graduated within the last three (3) years from a recognized institution.
Experience:

No prior work experience required.
Key Competencies

Strong interest in electrical design and infrastructure development.

Basic understanding of electrical distribution systems and components.

Analytical thinking with a detail-oriented approach.

Eagerness to learn and follow engineering best practices.

Familiarity with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, or other design tools is an advantage.
