About the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA)

The Financial Intelligence Authority is a statutory body established by the Government of Uganda under the Anti-Money Laundering Act (2013). Job Summary

As a Data Scientist, you will be at the forefront of FIA’s mission to harness data for smarter, faster, and more strategic decision-making. You’ll use advanced analytics, statistical modeling, machine learning, and big data tools to provide insights that inform operations, risk management, investigations, and policy development.

This role offers a unique opportunity to apply your data science skills to real-world public sector challenges and contribute directly to Uganda’s national development.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

As part of the data science team at FIA, you will:

  • Collect, clean, and analyze large and complex datasets to support investigations, reporting, and strategic decisions.

  • Develop and implement data models, machine learning algorithms, and statistical tools to identify suspicious activity and financial anomalies.

  • Design and maintain data pipelines for efficient ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.

  • Apply predictive analytics and pattern detection methods to aid in fraud detection and compliance monitoring.

  • Visualize data and insights using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Matplotlib, producing dashboards, graphs, and reports.

  • Collaborate with other departments to understand data needs and provide customized data solutions.

  • Ensure data accuracy, security, and compliance with data governance and privacy standards.

  • Support the formulation of data strategies and policies to enhance data-driven culture within FIA.

  • Document and present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Contribute to periodic reports and evaluations of data science projects and their outcomes.


Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Academic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Honors) in any of the following:

    • Data Science

    • Computer Science

    • Statistics

    • Mathematics

    • Or a closely related field from a recognized university.

Additional Certification:

  • Professional certifications in Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or related areas are an added advantage.

Experience:

  • No prior work experience is required – This position is ideal for fresh graduates and early-career professionals looking for entry-level data jobs in Uganda.


Core Competencies and Technical Skills

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL.

  • Experience with machine learning libraries (e.g., Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).

  • Familiarity with big data tools and frameworks like Hadoop, Spark, or Kafka.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex financial and non-financial datasets.

  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
