About the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA)

The Financial Intelligence Authority is a pivotal government agency established by the Parliament of Uganda. The FIA's core mandate is to monitor, investigate, and prevent money laundering and financial crimes within Uganda's borders. Through enforcing anti-money laundering laws and closely monitoring financial transactions, the FIA plays a vital role in safeguarding Uganda's financial system's integrity.

Role Overview: Data Scientist at FIA Uganda

As a Data Scientist at FIA Uganda, you will play a critical role in analyzing complex datasets to generate actionable insights that inform decision-making and operational strategies. You will work collaboratively with different departments, using advanced data models, algorithms, and machine learning techniques to detect suspicious patterns, enhance risk assessment, and improve the overall effectiveness of the Authority. This position offers a unique opportunity for data science professionals who are passionate about applying their skills to real-world challenges and contributing to Uganda’s fight against financial crime.

Data Scientist Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect, clean, and process large volumes of complex financial and operational data to extract meaningful insights.
  • Design and implement statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and predictive tools tailored to the Authority’s operational needs.
  • Build efficient data pipelines supporting ETL (extract, transform, load) processes to ensure timely and reliable data flow.
  • Apply advanced machine learning techniques to identify unusual transaction patterns, trends, and anomalies that may indicate financial misconduct.
  • Collaborate with various FIA departments to understand their data requirements and deliver customized analytical solutions.
  • Create clear and compelling visualizations, dashboards, and presentations using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Matplotlib.
  • Conduct forward-looking predictive and prescriptive analytics to guide strategic planning, risk management, and operational improvements.
  • Ensure the integrity, security, and confidentiality of data in compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.
  • Assist in formulating policies and strategies for leveraging data science and analytics across the Authority.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations on data science projects, insights, and recommendations for senior management.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Education

Honors Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a closely related field from a recognized institution. Professional certifications in data science, machine learning, or analytics are advantageous.

Data Scientist Experience

No prior work experience is required, making this an excellent opportunity for fresh graduates or entry-level professionals eager to start their career in data science within the public sector.

Competencies

  • Deep understanding of FIA’s vision, mission, and strategic objectives.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, and SQL for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Familiarity with big data technologies like Hadoop and Spark.
  • Strong grasp of machine learning algorithms including supervised and unsupervised learning.
  • Expertise in data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, Matplotlib).
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex datasets accurately.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge of data governance, privacy laws, and ethical standards.
