Cyber Security Officer
Full-Time | Location: Kampala, Uganda
Deadline: 7th July 2025
Yako Bank is hiring a Cyber Security Officer to implement and maintain robust cybersecurity measures that safeguard the bank’s information systems and data assets. The role involves proactively monitoring, enforcing, and operationalizing cybersecurity policies, strategies, and tools to protect against cyber threats and ensure regulatory compliance.
Reports to: Head of IT
Key Responsibilities:

Implement and monitor the Bank’s Cybersecurity Strategy in alignment with IT architecture and organizational goals.

Manage key cybersecurity tools and systems, including firewalls, endpoint protection, encryption, vulnerability scanners, and penetration testing tools.

Continuously monitor systems and networks to detect and respond to suspicious activity, malware, or unauthorized access.

Evaluate and upgrade IT security environments to improve performance while minimizing disruption.

Develop and enforce identity and access management (IAM) policies to control user access to data and systems.

Deliver regular IT security awareness training to employees and IT staff.

Support both internal and external IT audits, ensuring all compliance gaps and findings are addressed.

Oversee incident response and change management processes in line with IT governance standards.

Identify and assess cybersecurity risks, propose mitigation strategies, and manage vulnerability management processes.

Lead incident response efforts, including root cause analysis and remediation planning.

Ensure full compliance with the Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019) and other relevant legal and regulatory frameworks.

Collaborate with IT teams to ensure security is embedded into new systems, applications, hardware, and third-party solutions.

Stay current with evolving cybersecurity threats, trends, regulations, and best practices.

Contribute to the development and execution of annual cybersecurity budgets and work plans.
Qualifications & Competencies:
Education:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
-
Additional certifications in systems, networks, or databases are desirable.
Experience:
-
Minimum of 2 years in an IT security-related role, ideally in a financial institution, government agency, telecom, or consulting firm.

Background in IT roles such as network administration, system analysis, IT auditing, or risk analysis.
Certifications (an added advantage):
-
CISSP, CEH, CISA, CISM, CCSP, MCSE, NSE, CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent.
Key Skills:
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
-
Solid understanding of the Data Protection and Privacy Act (2019).

Familiarity with recognized security frameworks: ISO 27001/2, COBIT, NIST, PCI DSS.

Proficient in vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, and risk analysis.

Technical expertise in UNIX/Linux, Microsoft servers, virtual environments, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
-
Awareness of current and emerging technologies in banking cybersecurity and automation.
