Job Overview

A leading commercial bank in Uganda is hiring a Head, Legal & Risk Dispute Management. This senior role will oversee the Bank’s litigation strategy, dispute resolution, and legal risk management functions. The successful candidate will lead the Dispute Resolution team, manage external counsel engagements, and provide expert legal advisory services to safeguard the bank’s interests in regulatory, contractual, and commercial matters.

Key Responsibilities

Litigation Management

  • Directly manage the Bank's litigation and disputes portfolio, including both internal and external matters.
  • Develop legal strategies to mitigate litigation risks and proactively address legal disputes before escalation.
  • Collaborate with external legal counsel to ensure effective representation and outcomes in ongoing cases.
  • Review legal documentation, contracts, and evidence in support of litigation and dispute resolution processes.

Leadership and Governance

  • Provide strong leadership to the Dispute Resolution team, ensuring alignment with the bank’s legal risk framework.
  • Oversee the performance and development of team members, ensuring high standards of delivery.
  • Engage with board committees, senior management, and relevant stakeholders by preparing legal reports and providing legal risk assessments.

Legal Advisory

  • Offer strategic legal advice to business units and committees to support decision-making and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Interpret legislation, regulatory requirements, and contractual obligations impacting the bank’s operations.
  • Assist in drafting, reviewing, and vetting legal agreements, dispute resolution clauses, and correspondence.

Risk & Compliance Management

  • Identify, assess, and manage legal risks associated with business activities and client interactions.
  • Manage client complaints referred to the Legal Department, especially those with potential to escalate to litigation.
  • Ensure compliance with internal governance policies, legal requirements, and industry regulations.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare accurate, timely legal reports for board meetings, regulatory submissions, and risk management forums.
  • Maintain legal records, case files, and correspondence in line with internal policies and external requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Postgraduate degree in Law or a related legal field.
  • Admission to the Bar and a valid practicing certificate in Uganda.

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum of 10 years post-qualification legal experience, with at least 5 years in commercial litigation within a bank or financial institution.
  • Experience in a reputable law firm handling commercial and financial disputes is essential.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a senior dispute resolution or litigation management role, including people leadership responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute legal strategies and manage high-stakes legal risks.
  • Strong background in regulatory frameworks governing financial institutions.
  • Experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex legal agreements.
  • Professional certification in mediation or arbitration is an added advantage.
