Institution: Makerere University Position Title: Assistant Technician, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Reports To: Head of Department Location: Kampala, Uganda Application Deadline: 4th August 2025 Tenure of Appointment: 4-Year Contract Salary Scale: PU12 Age Limit: Applicants should not exceed fifty-five (55) years of age at the time of application.

Job Purpose

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Makerere University is seeking a qualified and diligent individual to fill the position of Assistant Technician. The primary purpose of this role is to ensure that all standard operating procedures and safety protocols are followed within the laboratory and workplace environment. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining order, supporting practical sessions, and contributing to a safe learning and working environment for students and staff.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clean and organize laboratory equipment, tools, and facilities to ensure a functional and hygienic workspace.
  • Implement and enforce workplace safety guidelines and regulations to minimize risk and ensure a secure working environment.
  • Assist academic staff in preparing and setting up materials and equipment for student practical sessions and experiments.
  • Maintain accurate records of materials, supplies, and equipment usage in the laboratory and ensure timely restocking when needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the Head of Department or supervisor in line with university operations.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of an Ordinary Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized institution.

Essential Skills and Competencies

  • Customer Care: Must be approachable, patient, and supportive to students and staff.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to express ideas and instructions clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Analytical Thinking: Capacity to assess technical situations and solve problems in a structured way.
  • Technical Proficiency: Basic knowledge of machines and the ability to use computers for documentation, data entry, and communication purposes.

The position is best suited for an early to mid-career professional who is passionate about civil engineering and supporting technical education. The ideal candidate will be practical-minded, detail-oriented, and capable of working with minimal supervision. A proactive attitude towards laboratory maintenance and student support is essential.
