Job Summary

Old Mutual Uganda is seeking a highly motivated Actuarial Trainee to join its Life Assurance business. The trainee will support actuarial services across reserving, pricing, product reviews, experience investigations, solvency and capital management, and financial modeling. This role offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates in Actuarial Science or Mathematics to gain hands-on experience in a leading insurance company.


Key Duties & Responsibilities

Technical Actuarial Support

  • Assist in conducting and reviewing internal actuarial liability valuations for insurance subsidiaries.

  • Support IFRS17 valuations and embedded value calculations using Prophet and MS Excel.

  • Perform accuracy checks and analyses to draw conclusions and make recommendations.

Experience Investigations

  • Conduct profitability analysis, experience reviews, and other actuarial investigations to inform business decisions.

Solvency & Capital Management

  • Assist with solvency computations for the entity on a risk-based capital basis, including stress tests.

Financial Modeling & Business Planning

  • Support financial modeling of business scenarios/projects to guide decision-making.

  • Assist with business planning, financial projections, and solvency projections for life entities.

  • Perform stress and scenario analysis on plan numbers.

Reinsurance & Investment Strategy

  • Conduct reinsurance analyses for East Africa subsidiaries to optimize arrangements.

  • Support the development and monitoring of investment strategies for OM Life businesses.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Prepare actuarial reports, presentations, Board Papers, and regulatory reports on solvency and valuations.

  • Provide temporary support across business units and group functions as required.

Risk Management Support

  • Assist business units and the Risk Department in identifying, quantifying, and managing insurance, market, and credit risks.


Required Skills & Competencies

  • Actuarial analysis and financial modeling

  • Business decision support and strategic planning

  • Risk management and solvency analysis

  • Investment strategy formulation

  • Profitability, experience, and scenario analysis

  • Strong proficiency in Prophet and MS Excel


Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science (Required)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics (Required)
