Overview
About UNHCR – The UN Refugee Agency
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights, and building a better future for forcibly displaced people worldwide. Established in 1950, UNHCR leads international efforts to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees, asylum seekers, stateless persons, and internally displaced populations.
Operating in over 130 countries, UNHCR delivers critical emergency assistance, including shelter, water, sanitation, and healthcare. Beyond emergency relief, it supports long-term solutions such as voluntary repatriation, local integration, and resettlement to third countries. The agency works closely with governments, NGOs, and host communities to ensure the dignity, safety, and inclusion of displaced people.
UNHCR in Uganda
Uganda is one of the largest refugee-hosting nations in Africa, and UNHCR plays a central role in supporting government-led responses. The organization works in partnership with the Office of the Prime Minister and other stakeholders to implement protection programs, manage refugee settlements, and promote access to education, healthcare, and livelihoods for displaced populations.
