About Nile Breweries Uganda

Nile Breweries Limited (NBL), founded in 1951, changed ownership multiple times before being acquired by SABMiller Plc in 2001. After merging with SABMiller in 2016, NBL became part of AB InBev, the world’s largest brewer.

With two plants in Jinja and Mbarara, NBL has an annual production capacity of 3.0 million hectoliters, making it the top provider of locally produced beer in Uganda.

Mbarara Plant

In 2011, Nile Breweries Limited conducted a study to determine whether to expand the existing Jinja plant or to build a new greenfield brewery at a different location in Uganda. The new Mbarara Brewery in Western Uganda was completed in 2013, with a total investment of $90.6 million. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni inaugurated the plant on August 22, 2013. The Mbarara Brewery initially had a capacity of 650,000 hectoliters of beer per annum, which has since been expanded to 1.3 million hectoliters per annum.

The total investment in the Mbarara Brewery is $90.6 million. This development follows the $29 million expansion of the Jinja brewery in 2009 and the $25.6 million spent on malting and effluent treatment plant projects in 2011, bringing our total capital investment in major projects in Uganda to over $200 million in the last five years.

Jinja Plant

The NBL heritage plant has a total capacity of 2.0 million hectoliters of beer. It sources water from the Source of the River Nile, near Lake Victoria. This connection adds credibility to one of its brands, Nile Special, which is marketed as a “True Reward from the Source.”

Jinja Malting Plant

Jinja is home to the country’s only Malting Plant, which was commissioned in November 2011. Initially, it had a capacity of 15,000 MT of malt, which has since been increased to 30,000 MT per annum. The plant produces high-quality malt that is considered the best in Africa. It is the sole supplier of malt to Nile Breweries’ beer plants in Jinja and Mbarara, as well as to several AB InBev breweries across East Africa.

Jinja Maltings has been recognized as Africa’s Best Vertical Operations Plant for six consecutive years and has won the Africa Quality Always Leaders Award for four consecutive years. Additionally, it is the first Autonomous Champion Plant in Africa.

The plant uses locally grown barley as its raw material, processing it through the malting process to convert it into malt, which is then distributed to breweries for beer production. This facility has significantly improved the livelihoods of many Ugandans, especially farmers. More than 10,000 farmers are supported by the company to grow and supply barley to the Malting Plant.

Mbarara Plant

In 2011, Nile Breweries Limited conducted a study to determine whether to expand the existing Jinja plant or to build a new greenfield brewery at another location in Uganda. Ultimately, the decision was made to construct the new brewery in Mbarara, Western Uganda, which was completed in 2013 at a total investment of $90.6 million. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially launched the plant on August 22, 2013. Initially, the Mbarara brewery had a capacity of 650,000 hectoliters of beer per year, which has since been expanded to 1.3 million hectoliters per year.

This investment in the Mbarara Brewery, amounting to $90.6 million, follows closely after the $29 million expansion of the Jinja brewery in 2009 and the $25.6 million investment in malting and effluent treatment plant projects in 2011. In total, our capital investment in major projects in Uganda has exceeded $200 million over the past five years.
